Students from each public school in the parish were saluted Monday night at the meeting of the Red River Parish School Board. The students were accompanied by their parents and were mostly surprised when they were honored.
Superintendent Alison Hughes announced the winners and gave reasons they were chosen. The Student of the Month from Red River Elementary School is Zion Kirts. His citation said, “He sets a good example. He continuously tries to help the student who refuses help by being encouraging and patient. He prefers to talk it out with the student who is calling him names and being the better person in tough situations.”
The Student of the Month from Red River Junior High is Carlena Henry. Superintendent Hughes said, “She does everything!” and gave her a big hug. Hughes said Henry “was chosen because she had the highest test scores in ELA (English and Language Arts) and Math in the 7th grade. Carlena Henry is now an eighth grader.
Hughes presented the Red River High School Student of the month to Makayla Caldwell. Hughes said, “Makayla is a hard-working student who always does her work. She volunteers for board work and acts as a class leader. She is an outstanding student.”
The Student of the Month awards are presented each month by VFW Post 7287 and Auxiliary 7287. At the board meeting Chris Waggoner represented the Post and Dawn Brewer represented the Auxiliary. Each student is presented with a certificate and gift card to Dairy Queen.
