The United Way of Northwest Louisiana held it’s annual Impact Awards Banquet to salute individuals and businesses who have made an impact in the past year. 2017 was the first year for Red River’s Back to School Bash, an event organized by local partners of United Way.

Bank of Coushatta was selected as having the Best Volunteer Efforts because their campaign included community outreach, securing sponsorships and manning the backpack table at the Red River Back to School Bash. United Way said, “They were a part of the process from the very beginning to the very end, in addition to being the event’s largest monetary sponsor. Michelle Vasco, Lydia, and the other BOC staff are the true definition of United Way champions. There is no doubt that we could not have done this without them.“

The Back to School Bash benefited students in Red River schools. School Superintendent Alison Hughes spoke at the event. Hughes said, “When United Way organized the Back to School Bash for Red River Parish schools, we expected maybe 300 people to come out in need of school supplies. We ended up serving more than 1,000 families by providing them with backpacks loaded with all the school supplies necessary for their kids to be set up for success.”

“In our rural community it can be a daily struggle for families to make ends meet,” Hughes added, “The first day of school should be an exciting time. Unfortunately it causes a lot of our families anxiety because they aren’t always sure how they are going to pay for all the school supplies required in order for their children to thrive. “

Hughes concluded, “Last year, families in Red River Parish didn’t have that worry. United Way… made sure every single one of our children had a backpack, every single one of our children had school supplies, and every single family that came out that night was served. “
